Another teen facing felony charges in Logansport reckless homicide case

This from the Pharos Tribune: LOGANSPORT, IN- Another teenager faces felony charges in a reckless homicide case that was filed last week.

Aubrey Rose Patlan, 19, Logansport, was picked up at 2:24 p.m. Friday on warrants for aiding, inducing, or causing reckless homicide, and dealing in a Schedule II drug.

She was released from the Cass County Jail after paying on a $2,000 cash or $10,000 surety bond.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed by Cass County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Anthony J. Ennis, an investigation into the Aug. 23, 2020, death of Anthony E. Barrientos, 20, Logansport, has been ongoing by the Cass County Drug Task Force, Logansport Police Department, and Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

After reviewing electronic media and holding several interviews, Ennis gathered enough information that led to the arrests of Patlan and Brandon Kistler, 19, Logansport.

Kistler was arrested on Thursday, Feb. 4. He remains behind bars at the Cass County Jail.

During the investigation, an autopsy was performed by Dr. Thomas J. Sozio, who found that Barrientos died from acute fentanyl intoxication.

The Drug Task Force interviewed Hannah Riemenschneider, 18, of Logansport, who informed officers that she and Patlan had purchased an alleged “Percocet 30” from Kistler. Patlan drove the two women to River Bluff Trail, where they bought one pill from Kistler, according to the probable cause affidavit.

The Prosecutor’s Office alleges that according to Riemenschneider, Kistler had warned them to take “one-half of the pill because someone had taken two of the pills and had to go to the hospital for care.”

Later, Riemenschneider and Barrientos had decided to share the pill. During the early morning hours of Aug. 23, 2020, the two were parked at 718 Washington St., Logansport, where they sat inside a blue Ford Focus, each snorting a line of the alleged Percocet 30 that had been purchased from Kistler, Ennis states in his affidavit.

Both eventually fell asleep, but when Riemenschneider awoke, she found Barrientos unconscious. According to the affidavit, she “attempted to perform CPR, but Barrientos never regained consciousness and was later pronounced dead.”

Riemenschneider was picked up on a court order on Nov. 13, 2020, after charges had been filed against her on Nov. 9, 2020, for a Level 5 felony of reckless homicide. She entered a plea agreement, of which a sentencing hearing is slated for 10 a.m. Feb. 23, in Cass Superior Court 2.

Kistler faces two felony charges: a Level 1, dealing in a controlled substance resulting in death, and a Level 5 felony, reckless homicide. His pretrial conference is set for 9 a.m. Feb. 23, final pretrial conference at 9 a.m. March 15, and jury trial for 8:30 a.m. April 7.

He also awaits a Superior Court 2 bench trial at 1 p.m. Feb. 22 in a pending case of battery resulting in bodily injury, a class A misdemeanor. The battery case was filed on Oct. 16, 2020.

Finally, Kistler is currently on probation after being sentenced on Nov. 3, 2020, to terms of a plea agreement on a class A misdemeanor charge of carrying a handgun without a license. He was sentenced to 365 days in the Cass County Jail, with all suspended to probation.

Patlan faces felony charges of aiding, inducing, or causing reckless homicide, and dealing in a Schedule II drug.

She also has been charged with resisting law enforcement, a class A misdemeanor, and minor in possession of alcohol, a class C misdemeanor, in an unrelated case filed on Nov. 10, 2020. Her pretrial conference for this Cass Superior Court 2 case is scheduled for 9 a.m. March 8 with a bench trial at 9 a.m. April 5.
