William “Bill” R. McGuire, IV, loving husband, wonderful father, great friend, and fantastic storyteller (If he started talking about Ireland, have a seat–it would take a while.), passed away on Christmas Day at home with his family. He was born on September 22, 1942, to the late William R. and the late Marcella M. (Gately) McGuire in Rockville Centre, Long Island, New York. He graduated with honors from St. Anselm College in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry and a year later on a teaching fellowship from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, with a Master of Science degree in organic chemistry.
In 1965, he married the love of his life, Maxine Chevalier, and during their 59 years of married life raised five children, of whom he was so very proud.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William R. and Marcella M. (Gately) McGuire.
Surviving are his wife, Maxine (Chevalier) McGuire; children: Kathryn (Scott) Hammel, Clemson, SC; William R. McGuire, V, Seattle, WA; Michael McGuire, Salisbury, NC; Carolyn McGuire-Loveall (Christopher) Loveall, Lebanon, IN; and Brian (Holder) McGuire, Huntersville, NC; grandchildren, Aidan Hammel, Meghan Hammel, Emma Hammel, Michael (Hannah) Hammel, Ian Hammel, Erin Hammel, Madeleine Hammel, William Hammel, Parker McGuire, Sean McGuire, and Isabella McGuire-Bannick; sisters, Ann (Thomas) Redding and Marcella (Frederick) Fahy; along with 22 nieces and nephews and a host of great-nieces and great-nephews.
Because of the nature of his profession, both in research and manufacturing, the family was transferred up and down the east coast from South Carolina to Massachusetts and as far west as Illinois. He worked for Standard Oil for Indiana (Amoco) for 16 years, where he earned several patents in both chemistry and engineering. He then joined RCA, where he was a Senior Manufacturing Engineer. He was responsible in later years for setting up new plants and training employees in France, Mexico, and Japan.
As their children grew up and moved away, Bill and Maxine discovered a great love of traveling, taking many trips over the years to Ireland, France, England, Scotland, Switzerland, and Canada.
Family was very important to Bill, both past and present. He was deeply interested in genealogy and was thrilled to learn all he could about the stories and culture of his ancestors. He loved seeing, joking, and playing with his 11 grandchildren and took great joy in seeing them grow into adulthood.
Bill was an avid golfer, who learned how to play at an early age on the famous Bethpage Black Golf Course on Long Island, New York. He played almost weekly and achieved two holes-in-one.
He was an usher at St. Paul Catholic Church in Marion and, with his wife, counted the collection money donated by the parishioners on all Sunday masses for years.
In addition to his hobbies and volunteer work, Bill worked a number of years part-time for Kelly’s the Florist, finally retiring for good just before Covid hit Indiana.
The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 1009 W. Kem Rd., Marion, IN.
Immediately following the time of visitation, a memorial mass will begin at 1:00 pm. Father Ted Rothrock will be officiating.
Arrangements are entrusted to Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.
