Marion Police Respond to Self-inflicted Gunshot Victim

On July 9, 2019 at approximately 2:12 am, Marion Police responded to the 300 Block of West 3rd Street for a self-inflicted gunshot.

A 17-year-old male reported that he was taking apart a Taurus, 9mm handgun when the weapon discharged. The 17-year-old reported that he didn’t know that there was a round in the chamber at the time he was taking the weapon apart. The 17-year-old was transported to Marion General Hospital where he sustained a non-life threatening injury to his upper left thigh.

Jacob Bunch, age 20 (owner of the weapon) reported that he had placed his weapon on the end table. Bunch reported that he was on the opposite end of the couch watching TV when he heard a gunshot and realized that the 17-year-old had shot himself. Child Protective Services were notified of the incident.
