John David Hughes, Sr., 81, of Marion, passed away at 7:37 am on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Marion. He was born in Converse, Indiana, on Thursday, February 18, 1943, to Orval and Thelma (Hutchens) Hughes. He was married to the love of his life, Rebecca S. (Tesdahl) Hughes, who survives.
John attended Sims Wesleyan Church. Throughout his career, he worked at Hartson-Kennedy (18 years) and Hutchens Construction (18 years), at which time he retired.
John enjoyed fishing and working in his shop. He was an avid IU fan and played basketball in his younger years.
Survivors include his wife, Rebecca S. Hughes of Marion; granddaughter, Catrina Hughes of Marion; brother, Tom (Cindy) Hughes of LaFontaine; sister, Janet Rogers of Marion; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Orval D. Hughes; mother, Thelma L. Hughes; daughter, Nellie May Hughes; son, John D. Hughes, Jr., who died five days later on December 17, 2024; brother, Fred (Dorothea) Hughes; sons, Henry Todd Hughes, Michael L. Hughes, and John D. Hughes, Jr., who just passed away on December 17th; daughter-in-law, Tina Hughes; and brother-in-law, Paul “Mossy” Rogers.
A Celebration of Life service will take place at 2:00 pm on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at Sims Wesleyan Church, 309 N. Main St., Sims, IN 46986. Pastor Brian Williams will be officiating. Burial will take place at Thrailkill Cemetery at 2:00 pm on Monday, April 28, 2025.
