Daniel Robert Matthews, 71, of Somerset, Indiana, died at 10:05 am, Friday, April 18, 2025, surrounded by his family in the comfort of his home, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on August 20, 1953, in Wabash, Indiana, to Robert and Glenna (Slagal) Matthews.
Dan was a 1971 graduate of Northfield High School and attended business courses at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. He married Kim Lee Kendall in Wabash on January 8, 1977. Dan worked 42 years for Duke Energy in Wabash, retiring in 2023. He was a member of the “A-Team” which traveled to storm disaster sites to help with the Duke Energy cleanup. Dan was a member of Bachelor Creek Church of Christ and the Electrical Workers Union. He was a certified referee, coached several AAU teams, was active in the Little League program, and loved being involved with his grandchildren’s sports activities. Dan and Kim enjoyed spending the winter months at their home in Sarasota, Florida. He also enjoyed golfing and was an avid I.U. fan.
He is survived by his wife, Kim Lee Matthews of Somerset; two children, Trisha (Aaron) Eckman of Wabash, and Michael (Amy) Matthews of LaFontaine, Indiana; six grandchildren, Matthew Cox and Marcus (Tabi) Matthews, both of Wabash, Quentin Matthews of LaFontaine, Brayson Eckman of Wabash, Mya Matthews of LaFontaine, and Zoey Eckman of Wabash; two great-grandchildren, Easton Matthews and Maggie Matthews, both of Wabash; his sister, Kim Hendrix of Wabash; and his father-in-law, Larry Kendall of Wabash. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother-in-law Chuck Hendrix; and his mother-in-law Nancy Kendall.
Funeral services will be 10:00 am, Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Avenue, Wabash, with Joel Cogdell officiating. Burial will be in Mississinewa Memorial Cemetery, Wabash. Friends may call 3-7 pm Friday, at the funeral home.
