Winifred E. “Winnie” Smith 96 of Huntington passed away at 8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at Parkview Huntington Hospital. Winnie was a 1938 graduate of Jefferson High School. She worked in food service at Huntington Memorial Hospital and Huntington County Community School Corporation. She retired after several years of employment. She was a member of the Salamonie Church of the Brethren and she served on several committees as an active member of the Women’s Fellowship. Winnie was a member of the Mt. Etna Order of the Eastern Star where she served as a Worthy Matron. She also worked as a greeter at Walmart. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her faith, family and church family were the main stays of her life.

Winnie was born on October 6, 1919 in Whitley County, the daughter of Olney and Carrie (Howenstine) Beghtel.

She was united in marriage to William G. Smith on September 4, 1938 in Warren. He preceded her in death in 1996.

Survivors include four daughters: Susie Higgs of Andrews; Sherry (Larry) Zook of Huntington; Connie (Jim) Martin of Evansville; Donna (Gene) Little of Hueytown, AL; eleven grandchildren, five great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter: Billie C. Hinkle, three brothers: Fred Beghtel, Errett Beghtel, Guy Beghtel, three sisters: Oma Walters, Ruth Byerley, Marian Speck, a son-in-law: Steve Higgs and a great grandson: Mason Higgs.

Visitation will be held on Friday, June 3, 2016 from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm at the Salamonie Church of the Brethren, 2662 W. 600 S., Warren, Indiana.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, June 3, 2016 at 2:00 pm following visitation at the Salamonie Church of the Brethren with Pastor Mel Zumbrun officiating.

Interment will be at the Mt. Etna Cemetery.
