William “Bill” H. Pettit, 86, of Fairmount, Indiana died Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at VA Medical Center in Marion, Indiana.

Bill was born in Otto, Indiana on September 16, 1929 son of the late Harvey Lee Pettit and the late Grace Lock Pettit. He graduated from Milan High School in Ripley County, Indiana in 1947. Bill served in the Marine Corps from 1948-1952 during the Korean Conflict reaching the rank of Sergeant. Upon discharge from the military he went to work at Fisher Body where he worked in Quality Control until his retirement in 1986.  Also at Fisher Body, he was a journeyman tool and die maker.  Bill was a member of the American Legion Post 313 in Fairmount, the Milan Masonic Lodge #31, Milan, IN and the Mizpah Shrine.  He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle to the Rocky Mountains, spending time with his grandchildren, and his love of drinking black coffee.  Most of all, Bill will be remembered for his kindness and the warm smile always on his face.

Bill is survived by his four children; Stephen (Nita) Pettit, Calistoga, CA, William D. “Chip” (fiancée, Pam) Pettit, Jonesboro, Douglas (Vickie) Pettit, Sana Rosa, CA, and, Judith Ann Pettit, Fairmount; companion, Marty Claxton, Fairmount, and her daughter and granddaughter, Phyllis Algood, Marion, and Missy (Eric) Turner, Fairmount; brothers; Donald Pettit, Marion, and Richard (Kathy) Pettit, Dadesville, AL; mother of his children, Dorothy Pettit, Marion; five grandchildren; Tinuviel (William) Kruse, Franklin, TN  Laura Pettit, Bloomington, IN  Karissa (Max) Strausbaugh, Jonesboro, IN  Seth Pettit, Jonesboro, IN  and Zack Pettit, Santa Rosa, CA  3 Step-Grandchildren; Christy (Nick) Lindemann, Lisa Burchfield and Mike Burchfield all of Santa Rosa, CA and nine great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by 1 Brother.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Fairmount Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 415 S. Main St., Fairmount, Indiana where the family will receive friends on Monday, May 16, 2016 from 4:00-8:00 pm with a Masonic Service at 8:00 pm.  A funeral service to honor Bill will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 17 at 11:00 am with Pastor Ron Meyer officiating.  Military rites and interment will be immediately following at Park Cemetery, Fairmount.

Memorial contributions may be made in Bill’s memory to Cancer Services of Grant County, in care of the funeral home.
