William “Bill” D. James, 66, of Marion, Indiana, passed away on January 24, 2017, after a short battle with cancer. Bill was born on September 7, 1950, in Winchester, Indiana, to William R. James and Meredith June (Dudley) James. He graduated from Marion High School in 1968 where he played football for the Marion Giants. He continued his education at Ball State University.

It was Bill’s desire to serve his country and he did so in the United States Air Force as a Staff Sergeant for ten years. From October 1970 to October 1971, he served as a Medical Service Specialist at the 483rd USAF hospital in Cam Rahn Bay, South Vietnam. The remaining nine years in the USAF were served as a Cardiopulmonary Laboratory Technician. Bill received an honorable discharge from the USAF on March 5, 1980. Bill then worked at Marion General Hospital as a Respiratory Therapist/Sleep Technician until his retirement in 1995.

Bill is survived by his wife, Lorraine (Newcomer) James; mother, Meredith June (Dudley) James; mother-in-law, Iris Newcomer; children, William James, II (Stacy), Jennifer King, Brianna Logan (Jason), Julie Holloway, Jason Morgan (Julie), Jayna Wheeler (Stevie); sister, Cheryl Anthony (Lynn); brother, David James (Ellen); brothers-in-law, Stephen Newcomer (Debra), David Newcomer (Arvida) and Robert Newcomer; seventeen grandchildren; aunt, Barbara Stanton (Myron); numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and Tammi Nash, a close family friend.

Bill was preceded in death by brother, Gregory James; father, William R. James; maternal grandparents, William and Valma Dudley; paternal grandparents, Fred and Myrtle James; father-in-law, Donald M. Newcomer; and sister-in-law, Nancy (Bilbee) Newcomer.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, Indiana. There will be a graveside service immediately following at Grant Memorial Park, Marion, Indiana.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Cancer Services of Grant County, Tower Suites, 305 S. Norton Ave., Marion, Indiana 46952.
