Von was born April 6, 1951 in Huntington, the son of Phillip C. and Evelyn Elsie (Ludwig) Freiburger. He lived his life in Lafayette Township, a 1969 graduate of Elmhurst High School. He married Joyce Smith on May 13, 1972 in Yoder. Von retired from Local 166 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union after 48 years as a member, 26 years of which he spent as Superintendent for Project Design and Piping. He was an avid sportsman, especially deer hunting; he was a member of NRA. He was a gifted craftsman who built many special pieces for his family. He loved the outdoors, gardening, and feeding his birds. There was no challenge to small or big that he would not tackle. He was the most patient, loving, respectful man to all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, the love of his life – Joyce Smith Freiburger of Roanoke; his daughter, whom he adored – Kelly (Andrew) Johns of Fort Wayne; and his son, who was his pride and joy – Craig (Angie) Freiburger, also of Fort Wayne. He was especially close to his granddaughter, Reagan Johns, his grandsons, Trent and Luke Freiburger, and his special nephew, Tyson Freiburger and great niece, Addelyn Freiburger, who all knew him as “the candy man.” He was an awesome uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was also a wonderful brother to his surviving siblings, Marie (David) Carmean of Yoder, Janet (Bob) Martin of Roanoke, and Doug (Bev) Freiburger of Ossian. His parents precede him in death.
