Thomas “Tom” C. Hack, 81, Gas City, passed away at his winter home in Brooksville, Florida, on July 17, 2017, after a brief illness. He was a devoted husband, father, and step-father. He loved to play golf, bowl, and fish, and he was a passionate Green Bay Packer fan.

Tom was born on January 11, 1936, in Superior, Wisconsin, to Harry and Violet (Peterman) Hack. He proudly served his country in the Army from 1954-1957, the Navy from 1959-1963 and, after leaving active service, was a member of the Army National Guard Army Reserves from 1975 until 1989. After his military service, he worked for American Motors, International Harvester, and retired in 1999 after 30 years as a journeyman machine mechanic for Foster Forbes/Heye America. He was a member of the American Legion Post 95 Jonesboro, Gas City Moose 1778, the Moose Legion, and the NRA.

After retirement, along with his best friend, Ray Webb, he became a Grant County Reserve Deputy Sheriff. There weren’t two guys who had a better time serving the needs of the public. A friendship like no other, they passed away within two hours of each other.

Tom is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jeanne Clegg; son, Steven Hack; second wife, Marlene; step-son, Curtis Birky; and step-granddaughter, Nichole Birky.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Hack, who cared for him tirelessly throughout his illness; brothers, Richard (Carole) and Micheal (Mary) Hack; daughter, Kelly (Bret) Wargin; son, Timothy Hack; step-children, Wendy Birky, Penny Sheren, Kevin Birky, Rodney (Judy) Taylor, and Debra (Scott) Thorn; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at the HPH Hospice Care Unit in Brooksville for the exceptional care provided during his last days. Also, the family would like to express their deep appreciation of the Webb and Becraft families, Betty Dalton, members of the Gas City Moose Lodge, and Jason and the rest of the staff at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service for all they did to help make a difficult time manageable.

Visitation will take place at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St., Gas City, IN, from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26, 2017.

A funeral service for Tom will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 27, 2017, followed by military honors at Riverside Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the Harrisburg Event Center (the old VFW) immediately following the service.
