Sterling Shanks, Jr., 89, Marion, died at 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9, 2016, in his home. He was born in Marion, IN, to the late Sterling and Captora D. (Nye) Shanks, Sr. He married Mariel L. Lewis in August 1946, and she preceded him in death two months shy of their 50th wedding anniversary in 1996.
Sterling was a 1944 graduate of Swayzee High School. He was a United States Navy Veteran, and retired from RCA after 31 years. Sterling enjoyed farming for 35 years, and he also loved to work in his garden, attend auctions, and collect things.
Survivors include his children, Jo Ellen (Joseph) Frazier, Marion, and David M. (Jenny) Shanks, Delphos, OH; grandchildren, Katy (Steve) Trusty and Julie Frazier; and great-grandsons, Wyatt Levi Trusty and John “Jack” Carver.
In addition to his wife and parents, Sterling was preceded in death by his step-mother, Audra Hicks.
Friends and family may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, February 15, 2016, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Mick Simpkins officiating. Entombment will follow at Grant Memorial Park.
