So Little Time

Epitaph Sage Thyme I told you so

Think About It. So Little Time Just the other day I was thinking about an epitaph I once saw.  At the request of a no-longer mortal hypochondriac, the immortal words I TOLD YOU SO!  were etched in stone as they say.  No longer could he regale his friends with stories of symptoms and impending doom.  No longer mortified by  public disbelief,  his rigor mortis had provided in death, the proof of his prescience in life.

If by chance you’re reading and think I’m dying, I’m not.  Well, yes I am. We all are.  That is the human condition, what we live for, our  birthright, the goal.  Remember, it’s not the destination that’s so hot (bad word choice).  It’s the trip that should be cool.

A couple of months ago a close personal friend said, “You really like to talk”.  I got a message from Mary that perhaps I should speak less and write more.  That was the birth of Sage Thyme, a Seasoned Citizen.  My business life was one of asking questions, listening and offering ideas, but never formally documenting my thoughts. You have become my test reader.  For that I thank you and do appreciate your comments and critiques.

There is a natural hope that others appreciate the deliberate plan of these occasional offerings.  Only mildly abashed by my blatant need for approval, I offer this review by a new internet friend.

“I have also greatly enjoyed reading your posts, all well-wrought essays on both timely and ageless topics!  You possess the rare talent of being able to say a lot in a little, which, I suspect, is more innate than acquired.  You have also mastered ‘the hook’ in your introductions and then bring it all home as you conclude.  I more than ‘approve’ your work, finding myself thinking things like Yes, yes! So true! He’s got that right! as I read.  Moreover, your ability to interweave personal life experiences, both past and present, into your socio-political commentary deftly challenges readers to ‘think about it’.  Thank you for sharing your writings with me!”

Another former teacher referred me to Strunk and White for a look at clarity and brevity.  Much appreciated and, I hope, usefully employed.

My best guess is that we all desire an outer expression to our inner thoughts. The problem is there’s not enough listening space for all the verbal volume.  Thanks to the internet, old dogs willing to learn new tricks can create a web log (blog for short) and tell the world what they think about almost anything.  Whether or not the wise words are read, they have at least been said without cluttering the sound track of others’ lives.

Have we used the words of thanks, recognition of excellence, thoughts of admiration and expressions of gratitude?  Have we neglected offering opinions approving the conduct of others? And perhaps most important,  have we said the words or emphatically shown those closest to us, how very much we love them?

I don’t know about you, but for me there is so much to say and there really is So Little Time.  Think About It
