Russell “Gene” Gilmer, 94, of Warren, IN, passed away at 12:38 PM on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at Heritage Pointe in Warren, IN.  He was born on Monday, November 6, 1922, in Huntington Co., IN.  He married Jo Ann Shultz on Sunday, January 19, 1947 in Warren, IN; she passed away in 1966.  Gene graduated in 1941 from Salamonie Consolidated Schools in Warren. He served in the United States Coast Guard during WWII from 1942-1946. He was in the Normandy Invasion during June 6th-July 24th 1944. He was a lifetime member of the Mt. Etna Lodge No 333, Masonic & Scottish Rite, Warren Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis. Gene loved horse racing and went to many county fairs and cities such as New York and Chicago to continue racing. This was his life’s desire. Gene and his wife ran the Shultz cafe for several years. After Jo Ann’s death he bought a farm next to his brother Paul and starting farming and ran a chicken egg operation.

 

Loving survivors include: Son – William Ray Gilmer, Port Huron, MI (Friend, Annette Mercatante, Wales, MI,), Granddaughter – Gillian (Eric) Decker, Marysville, MI, Grandson – Benjamin (Friend, Dena Gold) Gilmer, Rochester, MI, Great Grandchildren – Dahlia & Elijah Decker, Marysville, MI, Nieces – Barbara (Ted) Engle, Warren, IN, Kathy (Karter) Marzolf, Olympia, WA, Nancy (Doug) Johnston, Tumwater, WA, Nephew – David (Gayle) Gilmer, Olympia, WA, Several Great and Gr. Gr. Nieces & Nephews and Special Friends William (Linda) Shuttleworth and Tim Shuttleworth.

He was preceded in death by his Parents- Francis I. & Emma Gilmer, Wife – Jo Ann (Shultz) Gilmer, Brothers & Sister-in-laws, Paul (Frances) Gilmer, Raymond (Ruby) Gilmer, Nephew-Michael E. Gilmer, Special Friends-Bob & Tom Shuttleworth.

 

Family and friends may gather to share and remember at Heritage Pointe Applegate Chapel 801 Huntington Ave. Warren on Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. A service to celebrate Gene’s life will follow at 1:00 PM with Chaplain Ginny Soultz officiating.  Interment will take place in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Warren.
