Phillip G. Butcher, 85, beloved Husband and Father, was called to his eternal resting place on September 21, 2016. He entered this world on March 9, 1931 in Fairmount, IN.

Phil is survived by his wife of 63 years Joan (Roth). They were married on September 12, 1953. He is also survived by their four children, Gary (Karen) Butcher, Anoka, IN., John Butcher, Marion, IN., Jack (Leslie) Butcher, Cincinnati, OH, and Joanie (Barry) Howard, Fairmount. He had seven grandchildren, Terry (Sherry) Butcher, Travis (Tasha) Butcher, Amanda Butcher, Katie Butcher, Nick Butcher, Derek Howard, and Patrick Howard. In addition, there are 6 great grandchildren and 36 exchange students whom look to him as a grandparent.

Phil was the fifth of 10 children, Addie Oswalt, Fred Butcher, Bernard Butcher, Bertha Elsworth, Joe Butcher, Don Butcher and Rosie Johnson who preceded him in death. He is survived by Carolyn “Katie” Combs, Marion, and best friend and brother Jim (Marietta) Butcher of Fairmount. He is also survived by his brother-in-laws, Robert (Betty) Roth and Dan (Marilyn) Roth and Jim Roth proceeded in death.

Phil served his country as a Marine during the Korean Conflict. Returning home, he married the love of his life Joan, and attended barber school in Indianapolis. For 30 years he worked at PJB barber shop, retiring in 1986, but continued to build homes throughout the community.

He loved his family, and especially loved to attend not only his children’s sporting events and musical performances, but those of his grandchildren as well. He was a member of Fairmount Methodist Church, VFW, Fairmount Chamber of Commerce, and Fairmount Jaycees. For many years he served his community as a volunteer fireman.

Visitation will be held at Fairmount Chapel of Armes – Hunt Funeral home at 415 S. Main Street in Fairmount, Indiana on Monday, September 26 from 5 – 7 pm. Services will be on Tuesday, September 27 at 10:00 AM at the funeral home with Pastor Dawn Cuthbert officiating, interment will be in Park Cemetery, Fairmount, IN
