Paul T. Shane

Paul T. Shane, 77, Columbus, Indiana, passed from this life at 6:42 a.m. Monday, October 30, 2017, at Columbus Regional Hospital. Mr. Shane was born on October 31, 1939, in Grant County, Indiana, the son of Teddy and Emma Ruth McCan Shane.

Mr. Shane was a U.S. Air Force Veteran rising to the rank of Airman First Class. He was honorably discharged on May 29, 1961. He retired from General Motors as a Plant Engineering Technician in 1997 after 36 years of service. Mr. Shane was a 50-year member and a past Master of Grant Masonic Lodge No. 637 in Swayzee and a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 345 in Swayzee. He was a member of the Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rite and the Elks Lodge in Marion. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Columbus and was a former member of the Swayzee Christian Church. Mr. Shane was a 50-year member of Lions International. He was a former member of the Swayzee Lions Club and a current member of the Columbus Lions Club.

He had been the treasurer of the Cancer Control of the State Lions Club, held several offices of the State, District of 25F, and the local Lions Clubs. He went on ten eyeglass mission trips for the Lions Club and was a coordinator for eye screening in schools in four surrounding counties including Bartholomew County. Mr. Shane had recently received Lion of the Year for the State of Indiana and received two Melvin Jones Awards and the Progressive W.P. Woods Awards.

Mr. Shane is survived by his wife of 58 years, Myrna L. Mitchell Shane, whom he married on January 25, 1959; his children, Jeffrey (Kimberley) Shane, Columbus, Carol (Curtis) Binnion, Columbus, Bradley (Peggy) Shane, Columbia City, and Melissa (Gary) Shelton, Greentown; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Earl (Laura) Shane, Greentown; a sister, Ellen (Rex) Geiger, Florida; sisters-in-law, RoseEllen Shane, Kokomo, Barbara Mitchell, Fairmount, and Mary Mitchell, Marion; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Lois Anna Shane; and his brother, Kenneth Shane.

In Columbus, Indiana, family and friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, November 2, 2017, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home, 1029 Washington Street. A Lions Memorial Service will be held at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 3, 2017, at First Baptist Church with Dr. Daniel Cash officiating. Additional visitation will be for one hour from 10 a.m. until the service time.

In Swayzee, Indiana, family and friends may call from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with Mr. Shane’s funeral beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2017, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Rybolt Chapel, 314 N. Washington St., Swayzee. Dr. Daniel Cash will be officiating with burial following at Thrailkill Cemetery, Swayzee.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Cancer Control of Lions Club Indiana or First Baptist Church.
