Norma Jean (Pope) Hiers, of Macy, Indiana, our angel on earth went to be an angel in heaven on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at 7:10am a Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

She was born on December 26, 1940 in Peru, Indiana to Cecil and Mary (Spurgeon) Pope.  On December 12, 1963 she married James (“Jim”) Hiers.  He preceded her in death in 1981.

Norma Jean was self-employed, was a devoted grandmother, and was a longtime member Macy Christian Church in Macy, Indiana.  She was also active in Bible studies, prayer circles, and the Macy community in general.  She was often recognized by her extensive hat collection.  She made the world around her a better place by her sparkling spirit and the sparkle of God in her eyes.

She is survived by two daughters: Amy Jane Hiers (fiancé Steve Johnson), and Susan Hiers; and a son James “Jimmy” Hiers.  Also, grandchildren: Trisha Lewis, Lindsay (Brian) Adams, Justin (Kelli) Vorhees, Breanna (Emeric) Martin, Travis James Lambert, Brandy Lee Lambert, Maggie Murphy, Patrick (Desiree) Murphy, Mollee Murphy.  Also, two step-grandchildren, Heather and DJ, as well as twelve great-grandchildren.  Also, two sisters: Dorothy Greer of Peru, and Sandra “Alex” (Denis) Shigamura of Hawaii.  Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a son Mark Allen Murphy, as well as a step-granddaughter Jessica Lambert.  Also, three brothers: Cecil, Bob, and George (“Bud”); and four sisters: Marilyn, Pat, Janet, and Linda.

Norma Jean’s family would like to extend special thanks to Norma Jean’s friends of the heart… Sianna Deeds of Macy; Joel Lewis of Logansport; Elizabeth and husband Bill Butt of Macy; and Nancy Hannah and her husband, also of Macy.

Visitation will be held from 12pm – 3pm on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, 105 West Third Street, Peru, Indiana.  A brief funeral service will follow at 3pm, with Pastor David Welsh officiating.  There will be no graveside service.  Memorial contributions may be made in Norma Jean’s memory to the Macy Christian Church through the funeral home.
