Nancy A. Spradley, 85, of Peru, passed away at 10:50 P.M., Monday, February 13, 2017 at Blair Ridge Health Campus. She was born in Peru on September 18, 1931, the daughter of Carl O. and Carrie L. Graham Monesmith. Nancy married Russell Lee Spradley in Peru on January 2, 1953 and he preceded her in death on Jan 15, 2012. Nancy graduated from Peru High School in 1949 and participated in the Class of 1949 Alumni Group. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at Ball State University in 1953 and worked for Dr. Barnett in Peru from 1958-1960. She continued working as nurse part-time upon the arrival of adopted son, David. She retired from nursing in 1977. From 1960 to 1990, she traveled to live in Darmstadt, Germany, Lawton, Oklahoma, Roseville, Michigan and Arlington, Texas for the army. Nancy was an ideal wife of a military man and a dedicated mother to her son. She never complained about the long absences when Russell would be out on field maneuvers for months, even years at a time. She was always loyal to her husband and tried her best to raise her son to be a good man. She was an animal lover having had pet dogs, Pal, Midge, Alex, & Fluffy and whatever creatures her son would bring home such as snakes, lizards, tarantulas, and even a baby alligator one time!. She was a lover of nature and gardening. She was a bird-watcher and avid hiker. She also enjoyed swimming, having once swam across the entire lake of Beaver Dam. She was an excellent cook and baker. She loved crafts and knitted many afghans and scarves. Nancy was a non-smoker but did enjoy zinfandel wine and the occasional margarita. She also loved a good joke. She was the epitome of the ideal spouse and mother. Nancy is survived by her son, David Lee Spradley of Huntington Woods, MI; grandchildren, Bruce Spradley and his wife –to-be, Shairetha Rucker and Aaron David Spradley; great-grandchildren, Dominque Cole-Rucker, Tachiana Spradley and Valencia Spradley. A service celebrating the life of Nancy Spradley will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, February 18, 2017 at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 West Main Street, Peru. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Family and friends will gather from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M., Friday at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made through the funeral home to the Peru Animal Shelter or the Salvation Army.
