Myrel “Wanda” Thompson

Myrel “Wanda” Thompson, 89, Matthews, went to be with the Lord at 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, at Colonial Oaks Health Care Center.

Wanda Cheney was born on May 22, 1928, in Niles, Michigan to LD and Cora (Wilson) Cheney. She married the love of her life, Lawrence “Pete” Thompson on December 1, 1945, in Columbus, Kansas. He preceded her in death on January 17, 2003.

Wanda was the youngest of nine children and loved spending time with her family both here and in Michigan. She enjoyed making extravagant wedding and birthday cakes, and flower arrangements, and also enjoyed painting and drawing. Wanda was a member of the Matthews Wesleyan Church and loved sharing her love for the Lord, singing in the church choir and playing the organ.

Survivors include a son, Larry (Debbie) Thompson, Matthews; 2 granddaughters, Jennifer (late Bobby) Moore, Matthews, and Kim Skeens (Sam), Gas City; 4 great-granddaughters, Katelynn and Kenzie Skeens, Gas City, and Hazel and Delilah Moore, Matthews; 2 special nephews, Jeff Smith, Michigan and Chuck Cheney, Matthews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Wanda was preceded in death by a daughter, Lawrene Thompson; siblings, Burton “Buck” Cheney, Maxine Greevey, Edna Hartline, Leonard Cheney, Lyle Cheney, Eva Adkins, and David Cheney.

The family will receive visitors from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17, 2017, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St., Gas City, IN. A service to celebrate Wanda’s life will begin at 1 p.m. with Pastor Michael Cheney officiating. Burial will follow in Matthews Cemetery.
