Mayor Scott Long, at Monday’s Wabash City Council meeting, declared the week of March 18-24 as National Safe Place Week in Indiana.

The week serves to increase awareness about the importance of youth safety and the dangers young people face when they feel they have nowhere to go or are in crisis situations, according to Jan Williams, who oversees the local program through the Huntington County Youth Service Bureau.

The program has operated in Wabash County since 2014, and there are currently 50 Safe Places in the county. Last year, Williams told the Council, 10 area youth sought help through the program.
