WABASH, Ind. – May will be known as American Legion Poppy Month in the City of Wabash.

Mayor Scott Long on Monday night, April 24, read a proclamation during a brief City Council meeting.

The Legion was the first national organization to adopt the poppy as its flower, Long noted in the proclamation. It did so during its National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, in September 1920.

“By wearing a poppy during Poppy Month, Americans can honor the sacrifices made by our servicemen while assisting the living,” he said.

Long, after reading the proclamation, presented it to members of the Wabash Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary. Among those present were the 2017 Poppy Princess, Arie Holley, and the 1958 Poppy Princess, Susan Bonfitto.

Following the proclamation ceremony, Arie and Bonfitto presented all those seated at the council platform a poppy to wear.

In another matter, Long announced that Building Commissioner John Stephens accepted a plaque last week from the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership Vision 2020 program.

The goal of the program is to have all communities in Northeast Indiana to use the same type of requirements for building permits, simplifying things for contractors throughout the area.
