Maxine M. “Mickey” Avila, age 87, of Leo and formerly of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 7:50 pm at The Cedars, Leo.  She graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing as an RN.  She worked as an RN at St. Joseph Hospital from 1950 to 1993.  She also worked at Turtle Creek Nursing Home from 1977 to 1980 and at Covington Manor from 1980 to 1981. She belonged to St. Joseph Catholic Church, a bridge club and a euchre club and enjoyed crocheting.

Mickey was born October 20, 1929, in Elkhart, the daughter of Charles C. and Helen M. (Weirich) Janiak.  On November 11, 1950, she married her beloved husband of 59 years, Carlos Avila, in Roanoke.  He passed away October 23, 2010.  She is survived by 6 daughters Victoria (Mark) Linker of Huntington, Helena (Dan) Robbins of Roanoke, Anita (Mike) Bultemeier of Leo, Marita (Jobie) Johnson of Lutz, FL, Alicia (Scott) Raber of Churubusco, and Paula Avila of Fort Wayne, 2 sons Joe (Connie) Avila of Fort Wayne and Mike (Kim) Avila, of Fort Wayne, 27 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a son Carlos F. Avila and a sister Rebecca Wyatt and 2 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Friday, February 17 from 5-8 pm at Roanoke Memorial Chapel of Deal-Rice Funeral Homes and 9-10 am prior to the 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, February 18, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Dale Bowman officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Roanoke.
