Maurice L. Holmes, 94, a lifetime resident of Warren, IN, passed away at 8:15 AM on Thursday, November 24, 2016 at Bluffton Regional Medical Center in Bluffton, IN. He was born on Thursday, December 15, 1921, in Jefferson Twp. Huntington Co., IN to Chester & Orpha (Smith) Holmes. Maurice was a graduate of Jefferson Twp. High School. He served in the United States Army from 1942-1945, during WWII. He married Barbara J. Wiley, who passed away in 1983 and then married Janet Yerkes, who passed away in 2010. He formerly worked at Daugherty’s, Citizens Telephone Corporation as a lineman, Eckman Implement and retired from the United Methodist Memorial Home (Heritage Pointe), where he worked in the maintenance department. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, American Legion and the Warren Antique Tractor Club. Maurice enjoyed restoring many antique tractors and engines.
Loving survivors include: Daughter – Carole (Bill) Gordon, Huntington, IN, Son – Gordon (Becky) Holmes, Mount Juliet, TN, Step-Son – Matthew Yerkes, Cincinnati, OH, Sister – Dottie Mann, Ossian, IN, 4 Grandchildren and several Great Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his: Father – Chester V. Holmes, Mother – Orpha (Smith) Holmes, Wife – Barbara J. (Wiley) Holmes, Wife – Janet (Yerkes) Holmes, Step Son – Joseph Yerkes, Sisters – Emma Williams, Ruth Gephart and Mary Lee, Brothers – Kenneth Holmes and Dwight Holmes.
Family and friends may gather to share and remember at Warren United Church of Christ 202 E. 2nd Street Warren on Monday, November 28, 2016 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
A service to celebrate Maurice’s life will be at the Warren United Church of Christ at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 with Rev. Scott Nedberg officiating. Viewing will be held one hour before the service and burial will follow next to his wife Barbara in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Warren.
