Mary E. Armes

Mary E. Armes, 90, died Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at her Marion, Indiana residence.

Mary was born at home in Richmond, Indiana on December 19, 1926, daughter of the late, Louis Herbert and Lucy Cleo (Brown) Zurwell. She graduated from Richmond High School in 1945 and worked at McCrory’s Dime Store to save money to go to nursing school.  She attended Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana and the nursing program at Reid Memorial Hospital where she lived and worked until graduation in 1949,  married and moved to Jonesboro, Indiana. Mary was a registered nurse and retired from Marion General Hospital in 1991. She had also been a nurse at DANA and also did home nursing. Mary attended the Pilgrim Holiness church from 1949 until they merged with the Wesleyan Church and was a member of Westview Wesleyan Church until her death. Mary was a 4-H leader for 5 years and was a Purdue Extension sewing teacher as well as being a member of the Eagles Aerie #227, Parents With Out Partners, Archeology Club, and the Wabash Canal Club. She enjoyed sailing with her friend and going to local concerts. Mary played the violin and was an excellent cake decorator making many wedding cakes for family and friends.

Mary is survived by son, Elrie Armes, Jonesboro, daughters; Diane Reece, Marion, Darlene (Kent) Jackman, Toledo, Ohio, and Christine Elaine Armes, Jonesboro. 10 grandchildren; Melissa (Dennis) Sample, Angie (Bryan) McDaniel, Mary Lisenbee, Jasper Lisenbee III, William (Karalynn) Brown, Jonathan Jackman, Christine (Weston) Richards, Jessica Lisenbee, Isaac Jackman, and Hannah Jackman. 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents, Mary was preceded in death by 3 brothers; Richard, Leo, and Conrad Zurwell, sister, Inda Blose, son-in-law, Delmer Reece, and daughters-in-law; Yvonne “Trudy” Armes and Barbara Armes

​Arrangements have been entrusted to the College Park Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 4601 S. Western Ave, Marion, Indiana where the family will receive friends on Sunday, November 12 2017 from 2-6 PM and 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

Funeral service celebrating Mary’s life will be at Westview Wesleyan Church, 1300 W. 6th Street, Jonesboro, Indiana on Monday, November 13, 2017 at 10 AM with Rev. Ryan Budde and Steve Armes officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Gas City, Indiana.

Memorial contributions may be made to Westview Wesleyan Church in care of the funeral home.
