Manchester High School FFA Finishes 6th at State Soil Judging Competition

NORTH MANCHESTER — The State Soil Judging Career Development event was held in Vincennes, IN on Saturday, October 14th. FFA students evaluated a total of four holes for the competition. Two holes were evaluated for potential homesite spots and the other two were evaluated for potential agriculture production areas. Students had to check for soil textures, soil drainage, soil color, soil parent material, soil erosion, soil landforms, soil slope, and soil limiting layers. In addition, the homesite pits were evaluated for water usage suitable for humans in a potential home.

There were a total of 330 students competing from the state of Indiana. Manchester High School was proudly represented by five students: (freshmen) Justus Metzger, Guy Stephan, Sheila Winger, (sophomore) Skyler Michel, and (senior) Tyler Sivits. All of the MHS students placed in the top 75, with Sheila Winger placing 10th individually.

As a team, Manchester finished strong in 6th place, only seven points away from the 5th place team.

In April, the top five teams will travel to Oklahoma to compete in the National Competition.
