L. Alene Sloan, Ph.D., 83, Marion, passed away in her home at 11:05 a.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2017. She was born in Marion to the late Fred and Louvetha (Grindle) Smart-Wright. She married Kenneth J. Sloan on June 20, 1954, and he preceded her in death on August 15, 2013.

Alene received three doctoral degrees in Political Science, World History, and Economics. She taught French and tenured at Oak Hill High School in Converse. Alene then went on to teach French at St. Thomas Aquinas in Houston, Texas, for some time prior to moving back to Marion. She was a member of Retired Teachers Association, as well as a member and past Queen of the Red Hat Society.

Alene traveled extensively all over Italy, England, France, Switzerland, and Spain, and she never grew tired of teaching and learning. She loved gourmet cooking, as well as making hand-dipped chocolates and cakes.

Survivors include her daughter, Belinda (William) Whitehead, Frankton, Georgia; son, Daniel (Stacy) Sloan, Charlotte, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Elizabeth “Beth” (Darrick) Blumberg, Danielle (Brian) Knapp, Otto Trebing, Bernadette Sharpe, Caitlin (Chris) Whitehead, and Cassiopeia Whitehead; great-grandchildren, Jon Blumberg, Lanie Blumberg, Benjamin Knapp, Matthew Knapp, Kenneth Whitehead, Rayne Whitehead, and Rose Whitehead; sister, Karen (Dale) Shook; brother, Freddy (Sherry) Smart; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Nickolas Sloan, Charlotte, North Carolina, and her husband, Kenneth J. Sloan.

Family and friends may call from 12-1 p.m. on Monday, February 27, 2017, at VA Protestant Chapel, 1700 E. 38th St., Marion. Alene’s funeral service begins at 1 p.m. with Pastor Laurie Wolcott officiating. Burial will follow at Marion National Cemetery.
