Jules Scott Walker, 85, Marion, died at 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2017, in Colonial Oaks Health Care Center, Marion.

Jules was born in Connersville, Indiana, on October 26, 1931, to the late Robert F. and Fern (Spacy) Walker. He was a 1950 graduate of Marion High School. In 1951, Jules founded the Marion High School tennis program and, from 1952-53, was instrumental in building Marion’s first tennis courts. His passion for the sport led him to become the Marion High School tennis coach from 1960-66. He was the face of tennis in Marion throughout his adult life and was the 2nd Inductee in Marion High School’s Tennis Hall of Fame on September 18, 2014. In his honor, the Jules Walker Sportsmanship Award is now presented to one male and one female Junior Team tennis player each year. In his leisure time, Jules enjoyed playing tennis and table tennis.

Education was very important to Jules. He received his undergraduate degree from Wabash College, where he played four years of varsity tennis. He then received his Master’s Degree from Indiana University and his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from IU School of Law, where he was number one in his class. Before becoming a lawyer, Jules taught English at McCulloch Junior High and Marion High School and then Southwood High School. While teaching at Marion High School, he was the photographer for the school newspaper and yearbook. He also filmed the Marion High School basketball games played at the Memorial Coliseum.

After graduation from law school, Jules opened his own law practice and was also an adjunct professor teaching Business Law at Indiana Wesleyan University’s evening classes. Following his teaching career and continuing until his retirement, Jules practiced law at Kiley, Harker, and Certain Law Firm. He was a member of the Indiana Bar Association and the Marion Exchange Club.

In 1960, Jules married his first wife, Marilyn Ann Jones. They were members of First United Methodist Church in Marion, and they shared 48 years together until she passed away on February 18, 2008. He married Joan M. Arterburn on January 2, 2009, and she survives. Also left behind to cherish his memory are his special friends, Bill and Jan Beekman, Jim and Sally Baas, and Terry and Betty Porter. Jules was a kind, compassionate, and giving friend to all.

Calling hours are from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.

The service to celebrate Jules’ life is at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 1, 2017, at the funeral home with Dr. Eddy Shigley officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at Grant Memorial Park.
