John was born in Grant County on October 24, 1929. He was one of three children born to the late Jacob H. and Gladys P. (Hamilton) Richards. He passed away on March 1, 2016 in VA Northern Health Care Systems, Marion.
John enlisted in the United States Army and honorably served from 1946-1948. Later he went to automotive welding trade school in Chicago. On November 8, 1949 he married Mary Helen Boyer. Mrs. Richards preceded him in death on March 29, 2015. John worked for Dana Corporation and retired on July 1, 1994.
John was a member of the VFW and the Masonic Lodge. In his free time he enjoyed flea markets, rummage sales and being outdoors. He loved animals, especially his cats and having breakfast with retiree friends.
He is survived by two children, Pamela Richards, Marion; Gregory (Diane) Richards, Wabash; one grandson, Shane Richards, Wabash.
He is also preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Richards and sister, Joan Richards.
The memorial service with military honors will be held on Monday, March 7, 2016 at 6pm in Owen-Weilert-Duncan Funeral Home, Marion Chapel, 2722 South Washington Street, Marion, Indiana with Dr. Thomas Mansbarger officiating. Visitation will be held from 5pm-6pm on Monday.
