John was born July 11, 1943 in Huntington, the son of Max E. and Mary Ann (Waltz) Updike. He graduated from Lancaster High School in 1961 and was a 1967 graduate of Purdue University. He married Marsha F. Walker on June 25, 1966 in Huntington. He worked for the United States Army Corps of Engineers as an area manager.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Marsha F. Updike of Huntington; two sons – Tim A. Updike and Daniel J. (Jamie) Updike, both of Huntington; a daughter – Juatanne (Steve) Gersos of Fort Wayne; four granddaughters – Siera L. Updike of Kendallville and Sophie M. Updike, Hollyn M. Updike, and Ada M. Updike, all of Huntington; four grandsons – PV2 Brock M. Updike of Ft. Stewart, Georgia, Ethan I. Gersos and Noah D. Gersos, both of Fort Wayne, and Silas J. Updike of Huntington; two sisters – Carol (Ron) Burns and Debra (Dorm) Baker, both of Roanoke, and a brother, Joe (Teresa) Updike of Huntington. His parents precede him in death.
