Jerry Joe Smalley, 67, passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2017. He was born to the late Harold Smalley and Harriette (Heater) Smalley, who survives, on October 1, 1949, in Elwood, Indiana. Jerry graduated from Fairmount High School in 1967. He then served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era as a cook and went to Germany from 1968-1970. Jerry worked as a farmer and then later worked for R&L Carriers as a truck driver for 16 years, retiring just last year.

Jerry loved riding Harley Davidsons and enjoyed tinkering on cars in his garage. He rode his Harley to the Sturgis South Dakota Biker Rally twice. He was a car enthusiast. He was a great craftsman and enjoyed building things and working with his hands. Jerry also lived on a farm that has been in his family for over 100 years.

Jerry is survived by his son, Brent Smalley, Fairmount, IN; mother, Harriette Smalley, Fairmount, IN; and brother, Rex (Betsy) Smalley, TX. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Smalley, brother, Terry Smalley, and sister, Theta Langford.

A memorial service celebrating Jerry’s life will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. at the Fairmount Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 415 S. Main St., Fairmount, IN 46928, with his son, Brent Smalley, leading the service. The family has asked that friends and family join them after the service at the American Legion to have a time of sharing memories.
