Jay Wesley Nelson, 47, Jonesboro, passed away at 12:12 a.m. on Friday, March 17, 2017, at I.U. Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Marion to Jerry and Janet (Atkins) Nelson, Jay was a lifelong resident of Grant County. He graduated from Madison-Grant High School in 1987 and laid carpet and flooring most of his life. In his younger years, Jay showed horses and enjoyed going to the Anderson racetrack in the fall to watch the thoroughbreds race. He also enjoyed golfing and spending time with his golfing friends.
He will be greatly missed by his family, especially the light of his life—his daughter, Jasmine Joann Iva Nelson, Marion; sons, Zach Thompson, Virginia, and Austin Haydel, Atlanta, Indiana; parents, Jerry Lee and Janet (Atkins) Nelson, Jonesboro; brothers, John Mark (Irene) Nelson, Jonesboro, and Joe Nelson, Upland; sister, Joni Lynn (Rev. Charles) Glover, Hazel Green, Kentucky; several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles; and best friends, Howard Huffman, Ricky Reed, and John Smith.
The family will receive visitors from 12-2 p.m. on Monday, March 20, 2017, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St., Gas City. Services for Jay will begin at 2 p.m. with Rev. Charles Glover officiating.
