James Phillip “Phil” Albertson, 96, Warren, died at 7:50 a.m., on Tuesday, February 2, 2016, at Heritage Pointe, Warren, IN. He was born in Fairmount, IN, to the late Mark and Gretchen (Fissee) Albertson. Phil and Jeane Snyder were married on November 29, 1944, and she preceded him in death on March 30, 1986.

Phil lived most of his life in Fairmount and Marion. He was a 1936 graduate of Fairmount High School. Phil went on to graduate from Butler University in 1940, where he was a member of Tony Hinkle’s basketball team and Sigma Nu Fraternity. He later earned a Master’s Degree from Ball State in 1951.

Phil enlisted in the U.S. Navy in October 1941. After the start of WWII, Phil was commissioned an Ensign, serving on minesweeping ships in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pacific war zones. Phil earned eight battle medals while serving his country. After WWII, he and Jeane moved back to Marion where they joined the First Christian Church, where he served in the choir and as an elder and Sunday school teacher. Phil began teaching math at Martin Boots Junior High in September 1946. In 1965, he became a guidance counselor at Marion High School until his retirement in 1984. He was a Marion Giants fan and ran the clock for football and basketball games for several years. Phil was a member of the Indiana State Teacher’s Association, the Hospital Auxiliary, a 68 year member of the American Legion Post 313, Fairmount, and a diehard Cubs fan since 1936. He enjoyed playing golf and scrabble.

Phil is survived by his son, David (Betty) Albertson, LaFontaine; grandchildren, Amy (Dr. Shawn) Teague, Denver, CO, Karen (Solomon) Vanderpool, Wabash, and Eric (Rachel) Albertson, Sherborn, MA; great-grandchildren, Levi Teague, Quinn Teague, Aiden Teague, Gavin Teague, Ian Vanderpool, Taylor Vanderpool, Gabriel Albertson, Elyse Albertson, and Elijah Albertson.

Friends and family may call from 4-8:00 p.m., Friday, February 5, 2016 and 10-11:00 a.m. Saturday prior to the service, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave. Marion, IN.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 6, 2016, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Park Cemetery, Fairmount.
