James Edwin “Ed” McGuire


February 26, 1935 ~ October 13, 2017

James Edwin “Ed” McGuire, 82, of Gas City, won his battle and entered into his heavenly home surrounded by his family at 5:32 p.m. on Friday, October 13, 2017. Ed spent most of his life in Grant County, and was born in Gas City to the late Ferrol and Sarah (Davis) McGuire on February 26, 1935. On September 3rd, 1955, he married the love of his life, Carol Gorman, and she survives.

Ed was a member of the 1953 graduating class of Mississinewa High School. Ed spent his life in the grocery business as a produce manager, butcher, and store owner. He worked at several area grocery stores, including Marsh, Shroat’s Market, and Horners. He was the manager of Ed’s Country Market in Gas City and owned McGuire’s Foodland in West Unity, OH. Ed was a faithful Christian who loved to serve the Lord and shared this passion with his family and friends. He and his wife Carol are charter members of New Hope Baptist Church.

Ed was an avid sports fan with a love for the Indiana Hoosiers and the Chicago Cubs. In addition to attending numerous Cubs games, he was bestowed with the honor of throwing out the first pitch at one of those memorable games. Ed will be remembered as a man who fiercely loved his family and spending time with them. He enjoyed annual fishing trips with his family to Minnesota which created many fishing stories and memories. Other hobbies included gardening, bowling, attending his grandchildren and great grandchildren’s activities, and visiting with his many friends.

Those left to cherish Ed’s legacy include his loving wife of 62 years, Carol; sons, Mick (Angie) McGuire of Belmont, NC, Mike (Melissa) McGuire of Charlotte, NC and Mark (Lisa) McGuire of West Unity, OH; daughters, Mary (Rob) Althouse of Jonesboro and Missy (Troy) Simpson of Jonesboro; grandchildren, Matt (Julie) McGuire, Sarah (Andrew) Newns, Elyse (Chris) Kennedy, Josh McGuire, Katelyn (Larry) Bryant, Chelsea (David) Hall, Trevor Simpson, Levi McGuire, Alexis Althouse, Carl (Whitney) Simpson and Grace Simpson; great grandchildren, Bailey, Bella and Brady McGuire, and Kaiden Estrada; sister, Julie Michael; brother, Jon Teague; plus several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Ed was preceded in death by his father, Ferrol McGuire; mother, Sarah McGuire Teague; step-father, Marion “Sam” Teague; brother, Bob McGuire; half-brother, Phil Teague; and half-sister Marian Teague-Odum.

The family will receive visitors from 2-8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17th, 2017, at New Hope Baptist Church, Gas City. Services to celebrate Ed’s life will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the church on Wednesday, October 18th, 2017, with Pastor Mick Simpkins officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Gas City.
