Harold A. Biggs

Harold A. Biggs, 75 of Matthews, Indiana, died Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at his residence. Harold was an active man involved in many local activities; the Matthews Lions Club, the Covered Bridge Festival, and he was the oldest active member of the club and had been a member for 47 years. He served on the Matthews Fire Department for 32 years, was a member of the Matthews Masonic Lodge #650, and had served as the Secretary of the lodge for 13 years.

Harold began his service to the community when he was a young Boy Scout in Gas City, where he received his Eagle Scout Award and later went on to become an Arrow Scout. He was a member of the former DeMolay of Gas City and he also was a Boy Scout Leader for the Matthews Boy Scout Group. He was a member of the former Matthews Civil Defense and was a magician and was known as the Sly Hand Magician. He worked for Indiana Michigan Power for 34 years, the State of Indiana for 10 years, Matthews Feed and Grain for a short time, and he also was a bail bondsman for about 10 years. He was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, Matthews, IN. He enjoyed golfing and fishing.

Harold was an Army veteran and served during the Vietnam War; he had obtained the status of Sharp Shooter, received 4 Bronze Stars, and was an officer of TET. He received many medals during the time he served. Those medals included Army Good Conduct, National Defense, Vietnam Campaign, Vietnam National Gallantry, Vietnam Defense, TET Campaign, Meritorious Service, and also a Rifle Cross for the M14 and M16.

Harold was born September 11, 1942, at Logansport, Indiana, to the late Harvey and Lucille (Burke) Biggs-Walters. He was a 1962 graduate of Mississinewa High School. He married Shirley M. Carmin October 4, 1963, at Matthews, Indiana, and she survives.

Also surviving is a daughter, Stacey Alston, Matthews, IN; grandchildren, Desire’ (Mike) Mansfield and their children, Logan Hart, Madison, Hadlee, and Brooklyn Mansfield all of Kokomo, IN, Ronnie (Beth) Alston, III and their children, Devon Alston and Ronnie Wesley Alston, IV, all of Matthews, IN.

He was preceded in death by sister, Hildred Biggs; brother, David Biggs; and Step-father, Bob Walters.

Services for Harold will be Monday, October 16, 2017, at 11:00 AM at Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Jones-Smith Chapel, 259 N. Main St., Upland, Indiana, with Rev. Jan Bunch and Mick Simpkins officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday, October 15, 2017, from 2-6 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be in Matthews Cemetery, Matthews, Indiana, with military honors.
