Greta M. Schnepf, 79 of Huntington passed away at 10:29 pm on Sunday, January 1, 2017 at Visiting Nurse and Hospice surrounded by her loving family. Greta was born on June 21, 1937 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Reid and Evelyn (Olson) Erekson. She was the third of four children (Sandra, Gary, Greta, and Taya). The family moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1942, where her father was a Director of the Fort Wayne Civic Theater. As a child, Greta was in several of the Civic Theater’s productions and even had her own radio show – “Susie Smith Sees the City.” In 1950, the family settled in Decatur, Indiana after her father was offered a position at Central Soya. She graduated from Decatur High School and then attended Ball State University.

She married Roger Schnepf on August 26, 1956. The couple had two children, Julie and Eric. The family moved several times as Roger’s career in school administration advanced, and finally settled in Huntington in 1970 when Roger became Superintendent of Schools for Huntington County. A professor at Purdue University once told Roger that Greta was his greatest asset and the reason for his success. Greta devoted her life to her husband and children and later her grandchildren.

Roger and Greta enjoyed spending time with family and friends and also played a lot of bridge. After Roger’s retirement, she became an avid gardener (Roger was always on the golf course). She loved designing and planting her flower garden year after year. But above all else she was the constant and loving center of the family.

Survivors include: her husband: Roger Schnepf; daughter: Julie (Kent) Farnsworth of Fort Wayne; a son: Eric (Tara) Schnepf of Dallas, TX; a brother: Gary (Janice) Erekson of Fort Wayne; a sister: Taya (John) Cowan of Fort Wayne; and four grandchildren: Emma Farnsworth, Lee Farnsworth, Lily Farnsworth, and William Schnepf.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Reid and Evelyn Erekson and a sister: Sandra Mutschler.
