Flossie I. Esther, 90, Marion, passed away in her home at 6:35 a.m. on Sunday, July 23, 2017. She was born in Akron, Alabama, to the late Samuel and Bertha (Watson) Perry. Flossie married George Joseph Esther, Sr., in 1951, and he preceded her in death on July 24, 2004.

Flossie attended Grady Memorial School of Nursing in Atlanta where she obtained a degree as a Registered Nurse in 1948. While working as a Registered Nurse in Alabama, she was recruited by the VA Hospital in Marion, Indiana, where she became the first African-American Charge Nurse.

Her faith and family were an important part of her life. Flossie was extremely caring, loving, and nurturing. She was a faithful member of Allen Temple AME, enjoyed singing in the adult choir, and liked attending missionary meetings.

Survivors include her children, George Joseph (Beth) Esther, Jr., North Borough, Massachusetts, Ronald Lewis (Barbara) Esther, Riverside, California, Thomas Anthony (partner Jerry Turner) Esther, Durham, North Carolina, Meltonia Esther, Dallas, Texas, and Cameron Batice Esther, Marion; 7 grandchildren, Ronnie Esther, Jr., Tosia Esther, Tiffany Esther, Michael Esther, Anthony Esther, Elliott Cyrus, Kiana Davis, and Greyson Gore; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special caregiver, Sharlee McClung.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a Celebration of Life service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at Allen Temple AME. Rev. Shonda Gladden will be officiating with burial following at Grant Memorial Park.

Arrangements are entrusted to Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.
