WABASH COUNTY – Heartland Career Center has partnered with the Community Foundation of Wabash County to pilot an evening preschool program for local residents. It will be an eight week program for 3-5 year old children taking place in the career center’s preschool classroom. According to Bridgett Parrett, the licensed teacher for the program, the idea stems out of a need for preschool services in the local counties.
“Heartland already offers a very effective preschool program during the day. We wanted to do something unique – extending the program to reach those households that may have to work in the evenings or were looking for evening learning alternatives for their children. It is an academically focused program that will help children prepare for their future education.” The program is “very affordable”, according to Ms. Parrett at $20.00 a child per week. Children will be in the program Monday through Thursday from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. The program will start very quickly and will be limited to 8-10 students in the classroom. “We would like to start the program on Monday April 9th and it will run through Thursday May 31st, explained Ms. Parrett.
“The classroom is set up in modules, with the students doing arts/craft, reading, music, sciences and nutrition. We want to assist students with social, emotional, physical, and educational opportunities to help with their overall character and development.
Students that participate should be able to use the restroom without any adult assistance.” Another goal of this pilot preschool program is to determine if there is truly a need for this type of service in the future.
