Dr. Roger Howard Schnepf

Dr. Roger Howard Schnepf was born in Alvord, Iowa, the ninth of ten children to William and Stella Schnepf. The family moved to Decatur, Indiana in 1942. Roger graduated from Decatur High School in 1948. After serving in the United States Army, Roger received his Bachelor’s degree from Hanover College, his Master’s degree from Ball State University and he earned his PHD from Purdue University.

In 1956, Roger married the love of his life, Greta Marguerite Erekson. Their whirlwind courtship ended with them marrying just six months after they met. Greta, named Roger’s greatest asset by one of his professors, was his best friend and devoted partner throughout their 60 year marriage. Roger was very proud of his two children; Julie (Kent) Farnsworth of Fort Wayne and Eric (Tara) Schnepf of Dallas, Texas. He especially enjoyed his four grandchildren; Emma Catherine, Lee Matthew and Lily Margaret Farnsworth and William Roger Schnepf.

Dr. Schnepf began his career in education as a small town High School history teacher in Hudson, Michigan. He later advanced to the position of Assistant Principal in Richmond, Indiana, High School Principal in Lowell, Indiana and Superintendent of Schools in Noblesville, Indiana. In 1972, he accepted his final position as Superintendent of Huntington County Community Schools, where he served until his retirement. Roger was an avid reader, a passionate golfer, a dutiful garden-tender (for Greta), an enthusiastic supporter of the Boilermakers and a fierce bridge player. Roger’s magical presence lit up the room. He was always the first to smile at a joke, followed by the best laugh in the family.

Roger is preceded in passing by his lovely wife Greta, his parents, and eight of his nine siblings. He is survived by his beloved children, grandchildren, sister Marjorie and many devoted nieces and nephews.
