Doris Jean Wernert, 90, passed away on Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at 1:55 p.m. with her daughter by her side. She was born on June 9, 1927, in Louisville, Kentucky, to the late William Henry and Rose A. Hoffman, and she had just celebrated her 90th birthday. Doris married Edward Wernert on August 5, 1950, and he preceded her in death on June 13, 1989.
Doris loved baseball and played in a traveling women’s fast pitch softball league. She pitched a no-hitter and won the national title back in 1948. She was a huge Cubs fan and was glad to see them win the World Series. Doris loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved the Lord and was ready to take her spot in Heaven.
She is survived by her daughter, Rose Marie (Theodore L.) Harris, Upland, Indiana; granddaughter, Wendy Jean Harris, Gas City, Indiana; grandson, Charles Anthony (Nicole) Harris, Cleveland, Ohio; three great-grandchildren, Charles Jason (CJ), Grayson, and Quinn; and special friends, Loretta Nichter, Agnes Jonischkies, and Beth Sawyer.
Graveside services at Cave Hill Cemetery, 701 Baxter Ave., Louisville, will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 26, 2017.
