David L. Watson, 83, died in his Marion home at 12:19 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2017. He was born in Upland to Carl and Alta (Kizer) Watson. He married Sheila Rider on December 24, 1985, and she preceded him in death in 2005.

After graduating from Van Buren High School, David enlisted in the U.S. Army. Following his military service, he worked in the Shielding department at BICC General Cable Anaconda until his retirement.

David loved the arts and was a great artist, painter, and musician. His pedal steel and electric guitar were a natural extension of who he was, and he generously shared his gift of music with others. David also loved all things nature and being with animals, especially his turtles. History and genealogy were very intriguing to David and, therefore, spent many hours delving into this particular area. Above all, David will be best known for how much he loved his three sons and the wonderful father he was to them.

He is survived by his sons, Michael (Tammy) Kelly, Greenbrier, Tennessee, Jeffrey Kelly, Marion, and Matthew (Barbara) Kelly, Marion; 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; and brother, Jack Shaffer.

In addition to his parents and wife, preceding him in death were his brothers, Jimmy and Joey Shaffer.

Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2017, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion. Services will begin at 1 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Marion-Grant County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1921, Marion, IN 46952.
