Chester “Gene” E. Curtis, 79, Gas City, died in Marion General Hospital at 9:47 a.m. on Monday, May 23, 2016. He was born in Upland to the late Merril and Ann (Barker) Curtis. Gene married Rose Smithson in 1966, and she survives.

Gene was a Jefferson Yeoman graduate and a U.S. Army veteran. He was a Supervisor at RCA for 42 years, from where he retired, and he worked with the Gas City Council Zoning and Surveying. Gene was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Gene loved golf and his family, especially his grandchildren, and traveled different places with them. He also did small engine repair work on the side.

Additional loved ones Gene leaves behind are his daughters, Alicia Curtis and Glenda (Chuck) Rowe, both from Gas City; grandchildren, Doak LaBarr and Maggie Jean LaBarr; brothers, Jerry Curtis and Robert (Ruthann) Curtis, both from Marion; and several nieces and nephews.

Gene was also preceded in death by his brother, Leroy Curtis.

A memorial visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St., Gas City. Services will begin at 1 p.m. with Pastor Laurie Wolcott officiating. Friends and family are invited for lunch at First Presbyterian Church following the service.
