Charles E. Chaffin, Sr.

Charles E. Chaffin, Sr., 81, Marion, son of the late Joseph and Katherine (Harris) Chaffin, passed away in his home at 11 p.m. on Friday, December 1, 2017. He was born in Summitville on October 1, 1936, and married Judith I. Buckley on June 18, 1965. She preceded him in death on March 13, 2016.

Charles was a U.S. Army and Korean War veteran and qualified as an Rifle M-1 Expert, Carbine Marksman, and Rifle M-14 Sharpshooter. He served two terms in the military (February 3, 1955 through March 6, 1965) and was honorably discharged.

Following his military service, he worked at Thomson Consumer Electronics (formerly RCA), where he was a technician. He retired after several years of service.

Charles enjoyed camping and being outdoors. He loved tinkering with anything mechanical, especially cars. He was an avid carpenter and loved doing his own home repairs. He also loved spending time with family and friends but also enjoyed his alone time. Charles will be remembered as a hard worker and always said he was a jack of all trades, master of none.

He is survived by his children, Charles E. (Lisa) Chaffin, Jr., Marion, Tom H. (Pam) Chaffin, Sweetser, Kellie S. (Dan) Peal, Marion, Mark A. (Crystal) Golding, Marion, and Kathy (Earl) Gerstorff; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Carolyn “Sue” Bradbury; close nephew and niece, Bob (Nina) Phifer and Lisa (Richard “Dick”) Greene; several nieces, nephews, and friends; his dogs, Baby and Wanda; and his cat, Baby.

In addition to his parents and his loving wife; he was preceded in death by four sisters.

The family will receive visitors from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 7, 2017, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN. Burial will immediately follow at Gardens of Memory with military honors.
