Catherine S. Whalen, 74, Gas City, died at 2:05 a.m. on Thursday, July 6, 2017, at Marion General Hospital. She was born in Marion, Indiana on July 13, 1942, to the late Ronald and Rose (Wiands) Fortney. She married Gene Whalen. He preceded her in death on September 4, 1993.

Catherine was previously employed as a secretary for Mississinewa High School, General Tire and Owens Illinois and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a veracious reader, loved playing cards, and watching movies. Catherine loved people and found great joy in cooking and entertaining.

Catherine is survived by her sister, Ronda (David) Taylor, Gas City; nieces, DeAnna (Doug) Asscherick, Texas and Trena Langlands, South Carolina; nephews, David Taylor, Gas City and Travis Taylor, Maryland; great-nieces, Alyssia and Rikki; great-nephews, Russell, Trevor, Nick, Christian and Eli; great-great-nephews, Eli and Reece.

In addition to her husband, Gene Whalen, and parents, Ronald and Rose Fortney, Catherine was preceded in death by her daughter, Tracie Turner and sisters, Mable Freeman and Deanna Henderson.

The family will receive visitors from 3-7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St, Gas City, Indiana. Additional viewing will take place one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

A funeral service for Catherine will be held at 12 Noon on Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at the funeral home with Pastor Jeff Heron officiating.
