Byron Murray

Byron Murray, 83, passed away in his Gas City home at 8:54 p.m. on Monday, April 18, 2016, after a 12-year battle with cancer. He was born in Cadiz, IN, to Elmer Cecil and Katherine (McLain) Murray. Byron was baptized as a teenager in the Christian church in Middletown and was a graduate of Hartford City High School. On April 26, 1958, he married Barbara Ross in Gas City, and she survives.

Byron was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and the French-Indo China Campaign in the early 1950s, as well as a member of the National Guard. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal (1 Star), and United Nations Service Medal. He was self-employed in the service station business in Hartford City and Marion, and he retired from Gas City Utilities in 1994.

Byron loved fishing and going to their cottage on Secrest Lake. He also enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his kids, grandkids, and his dog, Lexie.

Survivors include his loving wife, Barbara, of 58 years; son and daughter-in-law, Keith D. (Debra) Murray, Upland; daughter and son-in-law, Traci (Rick) Haworth, Indianapolis; grandchildren, Leslie Haworth Robertson, Ryan (Courtney) Haworth, Atalie Murray, Bryce Murray, Josh Haworth, and Stephanie Haworth; great-grandsons, Ryder Haworth and Easton Haworth; half-sisters, Barbara L. Carter and Brenda Durst, both from NC; and half-brother, Carl Murray, NC.

Preceding Byron in death were his parents, Cecil Murray and Katherine Baker; brother, Leslie E. Murray; and sister, Rosalee Sumwalt.

Family and friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2016, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St., Gas City, IN.

Services to celebrate Byron’s life will be at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 22, 2016, at the funeral home with Pastor Mick Simpkins officiating. Burial will follow at Jefferson Cemetery in Upland.
