Beria Cynthia Marx joined her Lord, family, and friends in heaven on July 3, 2017. She was born in Marion, Indiana on September 28, 1942, to the late Charles W. and Esta (Embree) Graham and was a 1961 Marion High School graduate. Beria married Michael Hammond in December of 1960. She was a loving and devoted mother to Sonya Hammond Powell (Brett) Mullins and Russell Scott (Amy) Hammond and they survive.

Beria was a lifelong member of The First United Methodist Church in Marion. In 1967, she was honored as Woman of the Year in Grant County. She worked for Hanks Supermarket, also known as Lance’s New Market, mainly in the produce department, for nearly 50 years. Beria was a member the Koinonia Red Hatter’s and the AZB Sorority for many years before retiring to Punta Gorda, FL with her late husband, George Downey. Cindy, as she was known by her friends in Florida, enjoyed water aerobics, beachfront sunsets and parties galore. She made the best fudge and carmel popcorn ever! Cindy was everyone’s best friend. She attended Friendship United Methodist Church and during season she worshipped with her Alligator Park family at the Alligator Park Community Church. She loved gospel sing-a-longs and was called the “Energized Bunny” as she never slowed down.

She will be missed by granddaughters, Tori (Merical) Powell, Olivia (James) Powell, and Amanda (Anthony) Powell (who is carrying Beria’s first great grandchild, who “GG ” was so excited to meet); nieces, Teal (Dennis) Royer and Kathy (Tom) Luzadder; great nephews, Chad (Stacy) Royer, Craig (Jennifer) Royer and Brad (Angie) Luzadder; great nieces and nephews, Hadley, Allie, Audrey and Addison Royer and Riley and Hunter Marshall.

In addition to her parents and first husband, David, Beria was preceded in death by her sister, Althea Miller.

The family will receive visitors from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, July 10, 2017, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St, Gas City, IN, with additional calling from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday, one hour prior to the service.

The funeral service in Beria’s memory will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, with Marie Thompson officiating. Following the service, Beria “Cindy” will be laid to rest next to her former husband, David Marx, at Grant Memorial Park, Marion.
