WABASH,Indiana – Exciting news from the President of the non-profit Wabash River Trail organization regarding a new series of connected trails coming to Wabash County. Amy Ford detailed phase one of the new Wabash River Trail, or WRT, that will connect Lagro to Wabash. Hopefully, a 33-mile long trail will eventually run east to west across the county, connecting Huntington to Peru. From Peru, the trail will connect to the Nickle Plate which runs north to south from Rochester to south of Bunker Hill in Miami County.

Ford says that Phase one in Lagro will break ground in August. The initial part of the trail will run the mile-and-a-half distance east of Kerr Lock to the end of Basin Street in Lagro. The organizers, Ford said, want to run the 10-foot wide trail as close as possible to the river so as to allow for boat access. The trail will eventually stretch across the county in subsequent phases, but, as for now, Ford said that the WRT organization is focused only on phase one in Lagro.

She also added that the residents of Lagro have been very supportive of the project and that the new trail might even spur some growth in the town. Amy Ford.

She added that the desire of the WRT organization is to make everyone in the county proud to have such an attraction for members of the community that will increase their quality of life. She noted that the money will come from private donations and from grants. To that end, a new website will be up and running on Monday that will describe the project in greater detail. Donations will also be accepted at the website which will be found at www.wabashrivertrail.org starting early next week.

Ford also mentioned that the designing and planning of the trail across the county has been moving at lightening speed due to the fact that local donations are mainly being used, as well as due to the commitment of the organizers and their desire to ride or walk it.
